Farming and composting is a constant cycle. Each season brings its own unique challenges and rewards. Right now, we are heading into spring which means we are making some compost, about to start calving, and gearing up for planting season.

The past few weeks have been busy with getting more compost made. This starts with piling manure in our feed lot pens. We then use a bale processor to put down our carbon sources. Next, we pile the manure into the side dump and dump it onto the row of carbon. At this point we will begin to turn the compost with our compost turner to incorporate ingredients and begin the process. Each day we monitor temperature. It is important to reach optimum temperature of about 160 to ensure high quality humus compost. The picture below shows that the compost is “cooking” and reaching optimal temperature. Super cool frosty morning!

We have been spreading some compost on our crop ground to get ready to plant and we have moved some cows closer to home for the calving season in a few short weeks.

This last week we got the chance to have a wonderful family out to our operation to see how compost is made. It was so fun to get to know their family and their business. 605 Flower Co. is ready for spring and planting flowers with their C3 Compost. We are so excited to hear how it works for her beautiful flowers.
